Description

Many times an employee who does an outstanding job in their role is promoted to supervisor. But being a supervisor is very different from being an individual contributor. You are now responsible for motivating, mentoring, and managing others. You have interpersonal issues to help resolve, training to provide, and disciplinary problems to address. Many organizations don’t provide enough (or any) training for their new supervisors that would help them succeed in this new and more demanding role.

HR101 is designed to help you learn those things you need to know to make the transition from employee to supervisor. This course will help you understand the alphabet soup of employment laws and HR programs that you will now be responsible for administering, along with HR, including ADA, ADAAA, FMLA, STD, LTD, PIP, EEOC, etc. The goal of this course is to help you understand your responsibilities as a supervisor in complying with these laws and regulations.

Areas Covered:-

  • Legal interviewing: the importance of selecting employees based on skills and what you can and can’t ask a candidate.
  • What is employment at will? What does this mean to you as a supervisor?
  • Best practices in documenting performance. Is an annual review enough?
  • Your responsibility in cases of harassment.
  • FMLA defined. How do you work with an employee who needs leave?
  • Addressing reasonable accommodation requests – the importance of updated job descriptions
  • Employees and wage discussions
  • The critical act of documentation
  • Conflict resolution. Handle complaints promptly and equitably to avoid outside agencies and attorney involvement.
  • Communicate to your team effectively and often.
  • The change from peer to leader. Tips for managing this change effectively.
