Hospice Revocations: Risk Factors and Preventive Strategies

A "revocation" occurs when a patient or patient's representative who has previously elected hospice revokes their election and leaves hospice. Revocations are painful for patients, families, and hospices. Studies show that most patients who revoke hospice services die shortly thereafter, without the benefit of hospice to provide symptom control, care services at the time of death, or family support services through bereavement. Revocations are also considered negative marks on the quality of hospice services, and revocations are reported to CMS as part of your hospice's "live discharge" rate. Nationally, revocations account for more than 40% of live discharges.
For hospices, the problematic loss of census from revocations is compounded by the greater tragedy of losing the ability to be helpful to patients and families. Does your hospice team know how to identify risk factors for revocation? Do you know how to prevent these upsetting and painful events?
Watch this webinar presented by pioneering hospice physician Marcia Levetown, MD. Dr. Levetown will provide evidence-based information about the antecedents of hospice revocation and will discuss field-tested strategies for prevention.
